Suicide Prevention

If someone listens, or stretches out a hand, or whispers a word of encouragement, or attempts to understand a lonely person, extraordinary things begin to happen. (Loretta Girzartis, American educator and writer)
most people don't want to die, they just want their pain to stop . . .  . . .
Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 35 and 59.
Men are four times more likely to die by suicide than women and ABS data (2019) shows more people die from suicide than road deaths.

Research concludes that most people don’t want to die they just want their pain to stop.

Everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide.  A leading suicidologist once stated  "In the last analysis, the prevention of suicide is everybody’s business."  Schneidman, 1985
For immediate support Call Lifeline 131 114 (24 hours) or 000 if life is in danger.
3 steps to prevent suicide
1) Ask
If you think someone might be suicidal, ask them directly "Are you thinking about suicide?"
Don’t be afraid to do this, it shows you care and will actually decrease their risk because it shows someone is willing to talk about it. Make sure you ask directly and unambiguously.
2) Listen and stay with them
If they say 'yes', they are suicidal, listen to them and allow them to express how they are feeling. Don’t leave them alone. Stay with them or get someone else reliable to stay with them.
3) Get help
Get them appropriate help. Call a crisis line like Lifeline 13 11 14 or 000 if life is in danger. If you can get in straight away visit a GP or psychologist. Even if the danger is not immediate they may need longer term support for the issues that led to them feeling this way.

More than 75 per cent of mental health issues develop before a person turns 25

And yet, many traditional services aren’t equipped to address the unique barriers that young people face to accessing mental health support.

headspace began in 2006 to address this critical gap, by providing tailored and holistic mental health support to 12 - 25 year olds. With a focus on early intervention, we work with young people to provide support at a crucial time in their lives – to help get them back on track and strengthen their ability to manage their mental health in the future.

R U OK?'s vision is a world where we're all connected and are protected from suicide.

Our mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

Our goals are to:

1. Boost our confidence to meaningfully connect and ask about life's ups and downs
2. Nurture our sense of responsibility to regularly connect and support others
3. Strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us
4. Be relevant, strong and dynamic

We know that suicide prevention is an enormously complex and sensitive challenge the world over. But we also know that some of the world’s smartest people have been working tirelessly and developed credible theories that suggest there’s power in that simplest of questions - “Are you OK?”
Please note:  This page is under development.  Please return soon as we will be adding more resources to assist with suicide prevention.
